President’s Message

Our club members were certainly busy this weekend as we had the River of Stories prize presentations, a Harvey Norman BBQ and Music in the Gardens. River of Stories is an ongoing success for the club and is a real credit to Barry Young, who has led the project for many years. I was honoured to present the prizes to a talented group of young writers and look forward to seeing how they go in future years. It was gratifying to see the level of support given to river of Stories by Hume Bank, AlburyCity and Dymocks. Thanks to all of those who volunteered for the BBQ rosters and also to those who attended the prize giving ceremony at the Library Museum. I would also like to make special mention of David Gordon, who gave up his time to be our official photographer for the River of Stories event. Bravo to all!

Please remember that this week’s meeting will be held at Brown’s Lagoon as we officially open our Club’s Reflection area. This promises to be a memorable event, complete with entertainment. Please arrive at 12.30pm, with entertainment due to commence at 12.45. Food will be prepared by Julie, who as usual is demonstrating the motto of service above self! Also, many thanks to Roger Lescun, David Gordon and Dennis Martin for all they have done for this worthwhile project.

Pieter Mol’s presentation about the history of the UIVER was very interesting. The involvement of Rotary over many years has been one of the main drivers of this restoration project. The aircraft was purchased in 1979 by the Rotary Club of Albury West, which in turn enabled all that has happened since.

Thanks to all the members who supported our project now in its 14th year. A record crowd of parents, students, teachers, sponsors and media attended. 35 prizes were presented to Prize winning students and schools. Pres David excelled presenting the prizes as did Peter Merk filming all the winners. The Commercial Club already a major sponsor donated a dinner for two parents to the Red Room restaurant to the value of $200.  …………………  Barry Young

President’s Message 20 September 2017

Barry tells me that the Hume Bank has committed to the River of Stories this week. They are providing $1800.00 all up – $1200.00 in direct sponsorship and 6 x $100.00 start up accounts. Great news. In conjunction with the $2000.00 from the Commercial Club, $500.00 from Dymocks and the administration support from the Albury City Library Museum (including web-site assistance) the event this year is looking very positive. The awards will be handed out on the 14 October and it would be great to see  many Rotarians there to support this major program of the club.

Another project Barry has under his wing is work for the Homeless in our region. Barry is now after summer clothing; shorts, tee-shirts, caps etc. Marlene Carty has also approached me in regards to a project in conjunction with Albury City in lines with the Halve Waste program. Very early days at this point but some of the ideas include a car boot sale for clothing no longer needed. Strikes me there could be some synergies between these two projects – watch this space.

President’s Message 19 October 2016

Great work again by Barry with River of Stories. Large crowd, eager writers, proud parents and teachers and lots of smiles. Much appreciation to our sponsors and partners (Albury City, Hume Bank, Commercial Club & Dymocks Books). Kate de Hennin’s update on Albury 2030 was informative and as a member of the original planning group I was particularly pleased to see it still in operation.

River of Stories

We are delighted to advise that the Hume Bank have come on board as a major sponsor for our River of Stories program starting from the commencement of next years program. The sponsorship will initially be for just next year’s program, but after evaluation it is hoped to be ongoing. The program falls within their Community Services arm, and in return for acknowledging them as a major sponsor, they will be acknowledged in the usual ‘marketing’ ways of logo etc.  being shown on a special ROS banner, and ROS letterheads. Hume Bank, with our assistance, will attempt to utilise the  opportunity of trying to introduce their various Financial programs for School pupils which currently doesn’t extend into ‘the senior junior school years’ which of course ROS does. Hopefully this will be a long lasting ‘partnership’ with a major Regional Bank.
