President’s Message

It was great to listen to James Richarson’s story last week. James is obviously a very enthusiastic, conscientious young man and no doubt has served well as an ambassador of Rotary on his exchange in Germany. I came away with the view that it is not just the exchange student that benefits, but the whole community in which they interact – their peers at the school they attend and the families they stay with. The Rotary Exchange program is a fantastic service and both James and Agnes are testament to that – it is great that our Club is supportive of this program.

James was our club’s outbound exchange student who spent a year in Germany, arriving home earlier this year. James is a Year 12 student at Xavier. He says his year in Germany was the best year of his life so far. He met people from all over the world, not just Germany, because of the Rotary exchange student program. He toured around Europe in a bus with 40 other exchange students for a month. ‘An exchange opens up your eyes to the meaning of so many things. It has completely changed the definition of friends and family from those who you are with to those who love you for being you’ says James.

PE Gordon and his team were in attendance at the District Assembly on Sunday in Euroa. I’m looking forward to Gordon’s year – Gordon has a great Board assembled and this bodes well for our Club.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION – MOVIE NIGHT
Many clubs in D9790 participated in the recent movie night to raise funds for Polio Plus.
The result for our district is as follows … 15 clubs participated and raised a total of $18,460. When matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that makes a total of $55,380.
On a national level the screening was attended by 16,037 viewers and a total of A$185,989 was raised. When matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that is a total of A$557,967. Because of the falling dollar that converts to about US$435,911.  A fantastic result!  In addition, of the 21 districts that participated, the district that raised the most was D9790.  On behalf of all the children who will never suffer the effects of polio a great big thankyou to everyone for making a significant difference to the world.

Norske Skog Visit 1

Norske Skog Visit 2

Thank-you to Greg and Gordon for arranging last week’s tour of Norske Skog. The tour and the information presented by Michael was very much engaging. We were very much privileged to gain an insight into this iconic Albury landmark.

President’s Message

At last week’s Board meeting the Board agreed to an increase in funding for the Kintenden pre-school project. This is such an important project for our Club, and Deborah and Howard continue to do great work with this project. With changes to the $AUD there was a small shortfall, and the Board felt that it would be appropriate to meet this extra need. The Board also made a commitment to a local project – an Arts Festival that the Murray Conservatorium are developing – again this is a great initiative from Stephen and his team, and we look forward to being a partner in this project. Our Board through Dan and his Services group are also exploring an Octoberfest function for Gordon’s year, and we look forward to further information on this. All great projects – please feel welcome to be involved in any of these projects as they should all be wonderful parts of the fabric of this Club.

President’s Message

A big congratulations to our own Barry Young who was named Albury’s Volunteer of the Year. Barry, you are an inspiration to us all, particularly to people like myself who are one of the new-bloods in Rotary. Barry’s recognition is well-deserved and no doubt congratulations should also be offered to Bev. Please also remember making a contribution to Rotary Foundation to Every Rotarian Every Year. This is the goal set at the start of the Rotary Year by the District Partner, and contributions can be as small or large as you like. I know so many of you give in many ways, any contribution to EREY, even one dollar, is most welcome.
