Sunday evening and just back from the impromptu Bunnings BBQ! Bunnings had a last minute vacancy and through Julie we were lucky enough to snaffle the opportunity. Despite having to refer to the Bunnings risk management guidelines in the event of a cyclone (well our tent did get blown sideways at least a metre!), everyone survived and prospered, and assuming Rod’s maths is not too dodgy, the BBQ seems to have been well worthwhile. A big ‘thankyou’ to all members who made themselves available at short notice.Peter Lee rang with good news today – our club has been successful in all three of its applications for District Grants! That is, for River of Stories (for 2 years), the Arts Festival and a memorial garden which is being planned in conjunction with Albury City Council. Peter prepared two of the applications and has done a great job in communicating and promoting these projects to District. Roger B. likewise did a great job in preparing the application for the Arts Festival. |

We had a very enjoyable club meeting last week with the District Governor Richard Luke and his wife Lorna. The meeting beforehand with our Board was also productive and gave our Directors a chance to let the DG know what our plans are for the year, and of course for the DG to let us know something about how he is planning to operate at District level. I think the DG’s Partner’s Project, End Polio Now, met with wholehearted support from our members. Peter Lee is busy organising this year’s International Night … (which he started on virtually the week after the inaugural one last year!) … and has just sent an early invitation, created with Roger L’s assistance, to various ‘VIPs’. Peter has done a great job to secure our guest speaker for the evening, Tim Fisher, who will speak on his biography of Sir John Monash. This promises to be another wonderful night – it is on Thursday 3 September, and hopefully many of you, partners and friends can make it.
Welcome to our Inbound exchange student
We look forward to welcoming Juliette Raggi, or Jules, at our meeting on Wednesday. Jules arrived here last Thursday. There was a little drama as she missed her connecting flight from Sydney, so rather than getting here at 9.30am she touched down at 4pm. She is now staying with the Kadoui family, her first host family. Kelly Kadoui took Jules to meet a few of her future host parents on Sunday, including us. It was great to meet her and we are certainly looking forward to having her as part of our family

It is worth calling to your attention the email that Nicole sent to you last week regarding Nepal. Our Board has committed $1000 in response to the disaster in Nepal. Our funds will be devoted to the Rotary Club of Dhulikhel, a Club in Nepal that has come to our attention through Gordon Shaw.I know many of you will have already given to help meet the needs following the earthquake, but we will be passing the hat around this Wednesday at the Club meeting. Thank you for giving this your consideration.

A final reminder about Every Rotarian Every Year. Whilst this has been promoted as the District Governor’s Partner’s Project, I would like to emphasise that it is more than that. It is something in which both our Club’s Board and I urge all our members to participate. EREY is about making a contribution, no matter the amount – big or small – to Rotary Foundation. We have seen through this past year the important work that Foundation does – particularly with End Polio Now. Even if we just look at our Club level though, it is important to recognise that the amount a Club can receive through District Grants is directly related to the amount a Club contributes to Foundation …therefore if we are to succeed in receiving District Grants for projects that we as a Club see as being important, then we in turn need to support Rotary Foundation.
