29/01/2014 Whilst Australia Day is a memorable day for many citizens, it is an even bigger memorable day for RC Club of Albury – Hume, with the news that our late member Alan Hodge has been awarded a posthumous OAM General Div. for services to Communities of Table Top and Albury. Alan was a member of this Club from 1969 to his passing in December 2012. He held Executive positions within our club including President, Secretary, Treasurer, besides other activities of membership and Commodore of Wodonga Yacht Club, he also performed Meals on Wheels in excess of 30 years, and a local Justice of the Peace for 40 years. That is to say nothing of the loyal service he provided to his local Fire Service which exceeded the length of time he served within our Club. I know that quiet as she is, Phyllis and his family will be so proud that all his voluntary work has been so recognised. Also the Board and members offer their congratulations to Alf Armstrong of RC of North Albury who was voted the 2013 Albury City Council ‘ Volunteer’ of the Year .

AGM Justin is working busily away on the formation of his Board for next July, and as far as I have seen it is going to be a slight break away from our usual formats, and I think to our Clubs advantage, as it will also closely mirror the recommended changes from RI. I certainly will be voting for it when the time comes and hope you do as well when you’ve heard all of his ideas. Whilst next July seems a long way off, if Justin’s ideas are approved by club members, then the current Board will slowly implement them after Christmas so that Justin and his new Board hit the deck running.
Strategy Meeting update Gordon – yes, this really is a moustache – Shaw, will also be providing us on Wednesday with an update on the Strategic Planning program in which we have all had opportunity to express our thoughts and ideas at The Albion a few months ago. As I have stated publicly before, this is a great piece of work done by Gordon, Justin and Nicole. Again the Board will, where possible, and it has been approved by you, implement it in readiness for Justin and his Board to work to.

This has certainly been a very full week for us members as far as “Fellowship” is concerned. Last Wednesday evening approx. eleven members and / or partners attended the Regent Cinema to see the Premier screening of the film ‘ Backyard Ashes. Very topically cricket related, but quite humorous all the same. The Producer of the film advised us the majority of the film was filmed in a three week period from within his grandparents ‘backyard’ in Wagga Wagga and how the local Council contributed approximately $150,000 toward the making of the film which was made on a budget of $300,000. Afterwards most of us finished up at a local restaurant for some refreshments. Last night, Sunday, we had our Casserole Evening at Ron and Barbara Haberfield’s residence, and approx. 25/30 persons attended, and had a feast of food to taste and eat. Some of the desserts looked delicious. So many thanks to Ron and Barbara for letting us use their lovely home for the supper, and being such lovely hosts; also to the ladies who did the washing up after the meal so that us chaps could finish our ‘ putting Albury right conversations ‘etc. A lovely evening was had by all. |

Last Friday evening approximately thirty three of members, partners and guests enjoyed a good evening of food and wine at La Maison in support of our club project of fundraising for the Baby and Parent Unit at Wodonga Hospital. The food was as usual really a delight to consume and Wendy Killeen matched the wines perfectly to the food as well as giving a short précis of the complexion of the wine in question. If it wasn’t for the fact of ‘drink driving’ and I was sitting next to Beth Skirton was also in attendance as a guest then I would have certainly had more than half a glass of Rutherglen Topaque ! What is so great about Wendy is that though her business commitments are really heavy with much inter -state travel, she always tries to do things for the advantage of our Club despite not always being able to come to actual Wednesday meetings. A strong vote of thanks must go to Vicki Gray and Gordon Shaw regarding all the arranging in making the evening a success. Whilst we await final figures, it is estimated that we made approximately $1000 toward the Baby and Parent Unit at Wodonga Hospital, and we have another fundraiser to come in the guise of a Trivial Pursuit Evening at Thurgoona on Valentines Day next year.

Another busy week for members last week following Wednesday’s meeting. Vicki Gray showed all her Managerial skills re handling staff and put Ian Harrison and Roger Snell the task of showing her their culinary skills with preparing a BBQ for School Students who were attending a Mental Health seminar at the Albury Performing Arts Centre. Whilst all the foods were provided by the Council, it still required skill by Roger and Ian cooking a mixture of snags, rissoles, and chicken burgers. Very little left over anyway. At the end Vicki showed her driving skills by hooking up the trailer to her 1900 ute and drove away to store the trailer. Of course on the Friday evening, various members were engaged with the Midnight Basketball competition at PCYC, and trust that the evening passed away without incident and red cards being shown to participants. On Saturday, Barry Young acted as MC in announcing and presenting various school students with their various prizes from the River of Stories competition. Thankyou also to all members who attended the Albury Library for the presentations, including Julie who also made an appearance. One very good piece of news from the presentations was that we may have secured an additional $500 to $1000 sponsorship from the Commercial Club. Two of their Directors were in attendance and were advising me to write in and one of the attending Directors will propose the additional monies and the
other Director will second the proposal at their respective Board meeting.
