President’s Message

Well I can honestly report that last week’s International Convention in Sydney was really first class, very much helped of course by our other Club members who were able to attend with their wives in support. Some of the sessions were really excellent, and for me personally it was a real eye opener to see the different things Rotary are involved in throughout the world e.g The Mercy Ship – an excellent 60 minute video, which clubs can use … for a donation of $250 a club can purchase a brand new wheelchair for a disabled child in Africa … another nearer home was that Rotary has linked up with another association re Stopping Violence against Women etc etc. During the Convention, I had an informal chat to our District DG Elect, Patti Bulluss, and her husband Lance, and I think from our chat that they both are going to be very RI orientated re their respective aims for the District in their year of office. All being well various Club members who attended the Convention will give you are brief run down of events etc when they return for Wednesday’s meeting. Just as an aside, next year’s Convention is being held in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

I am currently in Sydney with other Albury Hume members attending the Rotary International Convention … a superbly organised event,  the opening ceremony a spectacular eye-opener with excellent speakers and entertainment. PM Tony Abbott and NSW Premier, Mike Baird, addressed the gathering. It is encouraging to see just how much Rotary is involved throughout the world in so many areas providing much needed support to the needy in home countries and abroad. I’m sure all members (including ‘yours-truly’) will be keen to share  their thoughts and experiences with the club on their return and in doing so provide some valuable fresh Rotary knowledge. Other social aspects of fellowship available to Rotary members wordldwide include … a wine appreciation society and a beer appreciation society (of course) ! I have been ‘roped in’ to join the RI Cricketers International Fellowship, which has the title of “Behind-the-Stumps” … (I don’t think I am required to play) ! Entertainment at the various venues has included Human Nature, Marina Prior and the Ten Tenors. The RI Convention next year is to be held in Sao Paulo in Brazil .

Presidents Message

Well that was quite a week wasn’t it? I trust you all found it as enjoyable as I did. Thankyou all for making our Rotarian visitors from Thailand so welcome with their short stay with us. I feel certain that they meant all the compliments which they gave us from all the work our  ‘Club hosts’ provided, the trip around NE Vic by Roger and Judy, plus all the arranging they did from the outset which really started when they originally went over to Thailand . Also a big thank you to Ron and Barbara Haberfield for providing the Club a wonderful venue for us to say ‘farewell’ to our guests whilst the ladies of Inner Wheel who called in toward the end to collect their partners, immediately got ‘stuck in’ to do some clearing up first ,so that us chaps could carry on doing the entertaining the guests. Thankyou all very much. Though final figures are almost completed I understand that we will be giving the RSPCA approximately $1000 from the Paws Walk BBQ a couple of weeks ago. So obviously the food on offer first met with the dogs approval for their minders to also share.

President’s Message

Well what an enthusiastic presentation by Roger Snell with moral support from Judy on their recent Rotary Friendship Exchange visit to Thailand. It was certainly interesting to hear Roger speak so enthusiastically about the cultures, food, and country in general.  I don’t know what our prospective visitors will think of our club, if they ask for our ages, and the older you are the more you are regarded as a type of Elder Statesman. Obviously the club will be revered by them all if we go by some of our ages! Last Tuesday, at the Directors meeting, we discussed and decided upon our contributions to various Rotary International groups, local communities etc. I will announce them to you at our next Wednesday club meeting. Also when the Rotary Grants applications are called for within Justins’ term of office, we will be applying for grants for River of Stories and Internationally we will also be applying for a small grant for Kitende School. Thank you all for taking the food parcels to the nominated recipients for Easter. I delivered one to a gent in North Albury, who was so delighted that he had been included. He kept reassuring me it would all be eaten and used no matter what was inside the bag. When you find persons like him, and they are having hard times, and are so appreciative that someone has thought of them, it makes everything we do in Rotary so worth while. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Roger Beardwell for all the work he has done in previous years on behalf of the Club in regard to coordinating our two schools in the Ian Murphy Debate competition. Roger has decided to hand over the reins this year to hopefully someone who will turn out to be half as good as Roger was … the new coordinator is a chap called Pete Lee! So thank you once again Roger for all your dedication and support to our two Albury Hume teams.  I understand that at the first round of the competition there will be a change from previous years in that the round will be held in early June.

Presidents’ Message

Trivia Night I hope you have been able to get friends family or work colleagues to make up some teams for the above event on Friday 2nd May at Thurgoona Footy Club rooms. The event is being organised for the Parents and Baby Unit at Wodonga Hospital, and is our club’s effort to raise funds as per the request of the DG’s Partners’ project for her year in office project. You may have heard that RC Albury West and RC Belvoir Wodonga have joined forces and are donating $11K each and giving the Unit a special ‘ Birthing bath’ for the actual Maternity Unit. At one time we actually discussed this idea with the Unit, but it was rejected as an idea as within a then newly commissioned report, the Health Consultants were not giving that bath any consideration re cost and that it would require much plumbing which at that time was uncosted. Our club donation will go to the actual Parents and Baby Unit. So please try and make up some teams of eight from the Office, Friends etc.and let’s make it a fun evening.
