Ian Murphy Memorial Debate

Our second team in the competition, St Paul’s College debated Wangaratta Galen College last Monday night at the Wangaratta Rotary Clubs meeting, Murdoch House Wangaratta, on the same topic as at our meeting “That Australia is under populated”. It is pleasing to announce that St Pauls College were the winners so we still have a team in the next round and a hope to have a team in the finals to be held at the district conference at Ballarat in March next year.

Ian Murphy Memorial Debate

We were entertained by a good close debate last Wednesday. Considering it was the first round the standard of debating was very high. St Paul’s College were successful and in the next round will be the away team against Galen College, Wangaratta taking the negative position for the subject …“That Australia is under-populated”  The other school we sponsor, Xavier High School, have a bye this round, however, as this could be a disadvantage in the second round we have organised a “friendly” debate against another school having a bye, Wodonga Senior Secondary College.  This will be held at Belvoir Wodonga RC meeting at Café Grove on Wednesday 27th June, 6pm for 6.30pm. Xavier will take the negative in the first round topic “That good communications are killing good communication”. Please let me know if you would like to come along to support Xavier and meet members of another Rotary Club.             Roger Beardwell

Club Meeting 29 February 2012

St Paul’s College have qualified for the final of this year’s debate as Cathedral College forfeited during the day of the semi-‐final due to sickness of one of their team. Anne’s subsequent urgent communication was very successful in stopping the St Paul’s team, adjudicators and Rotarians going to Wangaratta that evening. Subsequently she tried everything reasonable to obtain another suitable date but in the end this was not possible.

This is only the second time that we have had a team in the Final of this prestigious event and St Paul’s College will hope to be successful as they were in 2002.

The Debate will be held at 11.15am on Saturday 24th March at the District Conference in Melbourne. St Paul’s College are debating against Seymour College in the subject “That greed is good” and have been given the negative position.
