President’s Message

Wasn’t the opening of the reflection area at Brown’s Lagoon a fantastic demonstration of our club’s values and commitment to the local community? It was truly touching to see the culmination of the significant work being done by such a great group of people. We can all be proud and yet humble of this significant achievement. This project has been several years in the making and in addition to Board members past and present, there are Rotarians that deserve special mention; Dennis Martin, Roger Lescun and David Gordon were all highly engaged and went out of their way to deliver the project. On the day, we had Julie Frauenfelder and Diedre Bawden making sure we were all fed and watered and there were many club members that did “stuff” that made the event so special and enjoyable. Thanks to all of you!And speaking of enjoyable – wasn’t it lovely to have the ladies from our refugee community sing so beautifully for us? The diversity that is added to  our community by this wonderful cohort of people helps to make our region the special place that it is. I would very much like to acknowledge Gordon Shaw for the organisational skills he exhibited to get the choir there on the day. It was also heartening to see the acknowledgement given to our club’s achievement through the attendance of DG Malcolm Kerr, Doug McRae (President, Rotary Club of Albury West) and Deputy Mayor Amanda Cohn. I reckon that what we do is important and really makes a difference to the local community

President’s Message

Our club members were certainly busy this weekend as we had the River of Stories prize presentations, a Harvey Norman BBQ and Music in the Gardens. River of Stories is an ongoing success for the club and is a real credit to Barry Young, who has led the project for many years. I was honoured to present the prizes to a talented group of young writers and look forward to seeing how they go in future years. It was gratifying to see the level of support given to river of Stories by Hume Bank, AlburyCity and Dymocks. Thanks to all of those who volunteered for the BBQ rosters and also to those who attended the prize giving ceremony at the Library Museum. I would also like to make special mention of David Gordon, who gave up his time to be our official photographer for the River of Stories event. Bravo to all!

Please remember that this week’s meeting will be held at Brown’s Lagoon as we officially open our Club’s Reflection area. This promises to be a memorable event, complete with entertainment. Please arrive at 12.30pm, with entertainment due to commence at 12.45. Food will be prepared by Julie, who as usual is demonstrating the motto of service above self! Also, many thanks to Roger Lescun, David Gordon and Dennis Martin for all they have done for this worthwhile project.

Pieter Mol’s presentation about the history of the UIVER was very interesting. The involvement of Rotary over many years has been one of the main drivers of this restoration project. The aircraft was purchased in 1979 by the Rotary Club of Albury West, which in turn enabled all that has happened since.

Club Meeting 26 September 2018

Guest Speaker Reverand Catie Inches-Ogden was inspirational whilst at the same time, quite sobering. Catie has been an Army Chaplain in a part time capacity and is currently priest in charge of the Anglican Parish of Northern Albury. She told us that there are 5 areas for a Chaplain to cover; Pastoral Care, Ethical Advice, Spiritual Development, Religious Support and Character Development. Chaplains have to provide support for all sorts of issues, ranging from dealing with personnel who have lost important belongings through to assisting people cope with the death of colleagues. She let us know that all recruits spend time with Chaplains to help them identify values and potential ethical dilemmas that they may have to deal with throughout their career. Religious support extends to Christians, Jewish people, Muslims etc. As part of their job, Chaplains support and preside over events such as ANZAC days and other similar ceremonies. Catie was particularly proud to have spoken at one such ceremony at an Australian War Memorial Dawn Service. We talked about how difficult it can be for Chaplains to reconcile the essential difference between the violence of the armed forces and their own personal faith. Catie certainly has an interesting and rewarding job!
