Congratulations to Stephen O’Connell

A worthy recipient … Albury Hume member Stephen was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in this year’s Australia Day honours for services to the performing arts. Stephen is the Chief Executive Officer of the Murray Conservatorium of Music, a major provider of Music education and performance for the region. Stephen has been  regional conservatorium CEO for over 16 years. President’s Message 15 January 2017

I attended a Suicide Awareness course last Friday with Uniting Care Wodonga and what struck me was the statistic that the most number of male suicides is in the age range of 65 – 80 and that the no.1 cause is depression. I immediately thought of our club’s age profile and while no-one jumped out at me as fitting the common profile, we will have friends and relatives in the age range. I’m thinking that we should get the presenter, Tony Boyd, to give us a talk at a meeting.

President’s Message 18 January 2017

After the last meeting, I helped Julie deliver the personal care packs to Father Peter and had a thoughtful discussion with him in regard to the needs of the homeless. This was following his talk relating to the hygiene services his church provides. There is possibly a couple of worthwhile projects that we could do as a club that will benefit the less fortunate in our community.

Passing-on-the-Soap

Passing on some soap for a shower is a simple gesture, but it means much more. It’s about the power of a new beginning, re-gaining self-esteem, honoring the basic human right to physical and mental well-being, and building foundations of trust and self-worth. “Essentials are highly appreciated and the first opportunity for many men to begin a new chapter of self- care”  “It is truly comforting for them to have a warm shower and the basic toiletries that go with it.” Pinchapoo also seeks to help those who face temporary hardships.Pinchapoo is an organization started by one girl Kate Austin who wanted to help people after fires destroyed everything. She has now been going for 6 years and has wonderful organisations like Rotary who help distribute her care packs. We will meet the Pinchapoo team and Rotary Club of Preston  at our conference in Shepparton in March

RYLA

Below is Angela Larkin’s review of the RYLA Course she attended recently. Angela is also “paying it forward” by volunteering to assist with the RYPEN course in early 2017.

Hi, I’m Angela Larkin and I was your Albury Hume Rotary Club RYLA representative at the 2016 conference. The conference was very diverse and holistic, covering a wide range of topics including leadership, teamwork, goal-setting, conflict resolution, project management and public speaking. RYLA was extremely professional and impressive, the program has done Rotary extremely proud. I certainly urge you to continue supporting the conference in the coming years as it was an incredibly valuable and life changing experience for myself and the other RYLArians. I can honestly say RYLA has positively changed my life in a way that I never thought possible. Since completing RYLA, a number of doors have opened for me and I have been inspired to begin writing and speaking about my life experiences, and overall life happiness and success. The RYLA conference was a fantastic opportunity to challenge myself and learn an enormous amount about myself and others. I have made many great connections with other young people, connections I’m sure I will have for years to come.  I would like to say a huge thank you to the Rotary Club of Albury Hume for the opportunity to be your RYLA representative this year, I am looking forward to sharing my experience at one of your meetings in the New Year.
